  1. Probably better to have this conversation in our EVE forums. :)

It's interesting to me that they used tackle-Tengus.  They did almost no damage but appeared to be designed to hold you in place (perhaps with a terrific tank - idk).  You certainly managed to take a lot of damage before you died.  Best bet in that situation was probably to go for some easy kills (maybe the confessors) and/or use your neut defensively to try to shed their tackle.  Another thing might be to have some key modules for refit if you plan to dual-purpose a ship like that.  An MJD could have allowed escape.

  2. Welcome to the corp!  I'm just taking care of your access rights now.

Please read through our new recruits orientation and complete all the things!

    http://www.sohguild.com/index.php?/topic/17804-new-recruits-orientation/

If you could try to get that done within your first week, we would greatly appreciate it.  I will also send a link via in-game mail.

One thing we did not get to talk about too much last night is that all recruits start off on a trial period.  During this time, we are looking for three things: (1) fit / integration with SOHCO vibe, (2) fleet participation, (3) good communications.  Ideally, we would like to see you in fleets once a week or more.  The barebones minimum participation is one fleet per month.  We understand when IRL takes priority - in those situations, we just appreciation a bit of communication to let us know what's up.

Let me know if you have any questions or run into any problems registering for services.  Look forward to flying with you!

  3. Hey Mathias.  Thanks for being patient with me these past two nights.  Wednesday was a corp-led fleet, and Thursday was an important operation in defense of our home turf in Branch.

If I see you online tonight, I'll definitely make time for a mumble chat.  Other than that, you've jumped through all the other hoops.  Assuming our chat goes well, we'll offer you a corp invite - Scynner was clearly looking for more fellow Canadians to discuss Canadian sights!

I I have 3 return questions for you.

    1) How many times have you visited mac the moose?

    2) How many tours of Capones tunnels have you done? (I am somehow up to 3 although I haven't figured out why)

    3) How could you handle the mosquitoes and wasps this summer?  One trip to the park behind temple gardens and I was trying to convince the family to pack up and go visit anywhere else.

Ooh exciting - this has never happened before!

I have an easy solution for #3 - stay indoors. :D

So after talking with Solomon in game (I am going with the spelling of the brand and hoping it's right)

Was going for the biblical figure. :p

    Cat or Komatsu?

Pretty sure this is the first time that question has ever been asked on these forums!  Was taught by one of my business professors in college to be a Cat fan.  But I don't want to bias our applicant here.

Solomon / Valence here.  Happy to see your application.  Your background check was very straightforward, so there's no additional questions there. :)

  6. Hey there - this is Valence / Solomon here.  Thanks for the conversation earlier - based on what we talked about, it sounds like SOHCO might be a great home for you.  One thing I forgot to ask - what are your typical playtimes / what party of the country are you in?

  7. @Darkprozac will be joining us this weekend, after he's had a chance to say his thank-you's and farewell's to his WH corp.  Welcome!

To get you started with some light reading, please check out our new recruit orientation post, as well as the notes from our recent corp meeting.  As mentioned, you'll not be able to register for alliance or coalition services until you join the corp this weekend.

Looking forward to flying with you soon. :skywalker:

  8. Hello there!  Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed introduction - we tend to be very communicative ourselves, and definitely appreciate when someone makes the effort to let us know where they're coming from.

Based on what you've said, I would say you made a good choice coming here.  As I read your post and held up my mental checklist of factors that increase the likelihood of someone doing well and enjoying themselves with us, it looked something like:

    - mid 30's with real life obligations: check

    - lost interest in scripted games and likes a sandbox: check

    - interested in pvp: check

    - loyal to community / friends over an extended period: check

    - took on leadership role: bonus!

    - looking for engaged / non-toxic community: check

    - USTZ: check

I will say that, when we started SOHCO 1.5 years ago, we wanted to make sure we really experienced EVE.  We had all played before, on again off again.  But this time we committed to trying out different aspects of the game, starting in hi-sec, moving to a wormhole, and then eventually taking the plunge into null.  While I wouldn't say that any one aspect of EVE is perfect or more important than the others, I will say that null really gives you the best front-row seat to watch the living story of EVE unfold, along with an insider view of the players who write it through their choices, successes and failures.  In fact in our own small way we play characters in that story and help write it ourselves.  That, for us, is the real magic of this game.  Based on what you've said, I think you'll have a similar reaction to null.

That said, it's not without it's challenges.  Logistics are harder.  And other players don't always cooperate with your schedule.  You might set aside an afternoon for some peaceful PvE only to find that our home systems are being invaded by a wormhole corp.  You might join a PvP roam only to find that our neighbors don't feel like playing at that moment.  And so on.  Living in null requires a certain flexibility and resourcefulness.  It can be punishing at times.  There's also the initial act of getting out here - if you haven't done that before and have a lot of stuff you want to move, that will either be arduous or expensive or some combination of the two.  Finally, you'll be joining a structured "nation" of sorts, with a lot of communications software to register for, predetermined ship fittings, specific skills to train toward, etc.

Hopefully none of that discourages you, but I want you to make your first journey to null with eyes wide open.  I hope we can make some time this week to hop in Mumble and talk about it some more.  I don't think I'll make it online tonight.  I'll be around Wednesday evening, but we're leading a PvP fleet so I will be distracted.  Could try to sneak in a meet and greet around 8:30 EST before we undock.  Else Thursday evening should be good.  In the meantime, I would encourage you to hop in SOHCO Public and also ask any questions you may have here.

Thanks again for your interest! :)

I have only three things to say.  One I'm obliged to say.  One I really shouldn't say, but will.  And one I'm happy to say.

    1. Like we discussed in game, SoH is not a revolving door.  While that doesn't mean that every decision is final, it does mean we take decisions to leave seriously.  I understand that you felt like you needed to get this crazy thing out of your system.  If there's a next time, I want to make sure we have ample opportunity to talk before you make up your mind.  Agreed?

    2. This may be immature, but I just can't help myself...

I absolutely most definitely told you so.

    3. Welcome back! :)

  10. Good morning Elisa.  Enjoyed our chat (I'm Ashin/Solomon/Valence/Bob).

Maybe we should mention to folks that you're not planning to formally apply to our EVE corp for another week or two, right?  I think you said you were going to focus on the new season in Path of Exile first.  I do agree with others that EVE is very different from any other MMO.  That's of course why we're here. :D

Oh, I did have a chance to look over your skills.  Wow!  You really did inject basically everything in the game except missiles, haha.  I would suggest you have missile related skills in your training queue while you are semi-AFK.  Specifically, work toward being able to use T2 rapid light missile launchers and heavy missile launchers.  The former is used a lot in our T1 cruiser roams, the latter is used in our cerberus fleets.  There's also some support skills that might have escaped your notice, but are still quite important.  For example: Armor Layering, Acceleration Control, Fuel Conservation, and the various sensor compensation skills (under targeting).  I would at least get those to 3 or 4.  You might also think about training Propulsion Jamming to 5, since you have basically everything else you would need to fly interdictors.

Just some ideas for you to think about.

  11. Hi Simone!  Are you ready to be addressed as Simone from here on out? :p

I enjoyed chatting with you last night, and I'm glad to see you here.  This is Valence / Solomon / Bob by the way.  I probably have too many names.

Is it bad if I don't know what disc golf is?

I don't have any other questions, since we had a chance to talk for a while in Mumble already.  I do want to share a quote from the interview: "I could tell you guys are different because you actually use sentences."

I still have not gotten a chance to go through your API check, as it has been a crazy day at work.  We'll try to make sure we get to that today/tonight.  Cheers.

  12. Hello Brinelan - Solomon / Valence here.  It's been nice chatting back and forth over the past few days.  I've asked all my questions already, so I will leave it to these guys.

Welcome to the corp, and good luck sorting out all the comms!

  13. Hi Jason,

Thanks for stopping by, and taking a moment to introduce yourself.  I think it's cool that you took the initiative to try running your own corp - there's no shame at all in trying something out and realizing it's not for you.

Life in null-sec is definitely different from life in a quiet WH.  Our corp has done both, so I speak with experience there.  In our alliance, things will be a lot more structured than what you may be used to.  We'll have certain doctrines (fleet comps) that we will ask you to train into.  There will be a bunch of comms software to register for.  Small fleets have a casual and social feel, but large fleets are generally very disciplined.  There will also be a lot more traffic than what you're used to, so when you're ratting or mining or whatever you do to make money, you must be a lot more vigilant and aware of what's going on in your system and the systems near you.

That said, we much preferred null.  This is where the space politics and space drama that become EVE's stories generally take place.  So, if you want to experience the living/breathing aspect of this game, you need to live in null (or lowsec) imo.

To you question about the POS, generally speaking our corp can request a moon from the alliance, if a member wants to erect a POS.  But we would need to have a conversation about what you intend to do with the POS, etc.  I would say yes it is possible but that is probably not something I would approve until after you've been in the corp for a while and passed your probation period.

Lastly, I just want to make sure you're aware that we're mostly an adult group.  Some of us are just about old enough to be your dad. :p  You meet our minimum age requirement, and I've known plenty of teenagers that were more emotionally mature than some of the "grown ups" in our guild while I've been leading it.  But I think it's something we should be upfront about.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed, and also tell us a little more about this International  Baccalaureate program you're in?  It sounds interesting!
