On the upside, I am now confident that my car breaks work fantastically. However, I'd have preferred not to learn that by having a car pull out in front of me on a hill while I'm going 40mph. Thankfully the oncoming traffic lane was empty, but the look of "oh fuck did I just commit suicide" in that lady's eyes is going to stay with me for a while, as will the profuse "I'm so sorry" mouthed to me through the window as I came to a stop inches from her car door.

It totally could! But I know exactly the face you speak of Val. Saw it once while sliding through a highway exit in a foot of snow as a guy stuck in a drift opened his door right in my path. The reaction you see in their eyes and face is nuts. Glad you made it out alright!
