Wildstar Intro - Jabbers

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I saw your thread on the W* forums and you all looked like a good fit for my playstyle.

I am 39 currently living in AZ.  I work in banking/finance and am married with 2 kids (2 and 4).

My MMO experience is primarily WoW where I played exclusively on PVP servers enjoying all aspects of PVP: arenas, battlegrounds, WPVP etc.  My accomplishments (if you want to call them that) in PVP were playing multiple characters over 2300 in 3s and had the Battlemaster title.  I enjoy 5 man dungeons but really don't have the time/desire to raid as I primarily will be looking to spend my time PVPing and socializing.  I always enjoy helping guildies gear up their mains or alts, helping out if they're having ganking troubles out in the world, and looking to stir up some trouble in Exile territory.

I have played a bit of SWTOR and GW2 as well but Wildstar looks to be my new home for a while.

I am looking to play a Chua who will be an Engineer because Science.  Probably going the Soldier path although I am torn between that and Settler.  I sort of like the titles and weapons lockboxes for Soldier better as those can be some fun toys for WPVP and also the GTFO button to safety if something bad is pulled or I see 20 Exiles bearing down on me :).  But then those Settler buffs...will probably just hope there's enough Settlers out there to benefit me.

Ultimately will go Mining / Architect for professions but likely will go dual crafting with Mining / Survivalist while I level to 50 to sell mats to all of the overachievers that want to be first with all of the end game crafting.  As much as I like PVP the housing system seems like a pretty amazing time sink in itself.

You guys seem like a great fit and hope to be a contributing member of the guild in early access.

Nice to see you have early access, you will be in good company. :)

39 hmm, who was your favorite 80's hair band?

Did you have big hair, if so do you have pictures of it?

Is your prom picture backdrop an off shade of blue with balloons in it?

Great intro and welcome to the forums! I mainly PvP as well, but raids in WS actually look pretty fun. You should check out the raid vid if you haven't already.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of gaming?

Does your wife like to game a little?

Why do you think most people don't like the third Godfather movie?

My favorite band growing up was Van Halen, I guess they're in that category...although I am a fan of all of the ridiculousness that is hair metal.

I never had big hair but I did have a fairly sweet mullet back in the day.  I will have to track that down although I have tried to burn all copies but am pretty sure multiple people have it for blackmailing purposes.

It was fairly sad when my younger sister had "80s" day at her high school and I was like every day my freshman and sophomore year in high school was 80s day.

Acid washed jeans FTW.

Hobbies / interests outside of gaming are golf when I can, and taking in sporting events or traveling.  With my 4 year old our hobbies now consist of watching his soccer and tee ball games seemingly more and more.

My wife hates computer games and assumes everyone I play with are all 12 year old Chinese kids.  She is in the camp of saying I waste my time gaming while proceeding to watch 3 hours of a Real Housewives marathon lol.  Although she would probably like it if she tried more, we do have a Wii and she gets very competitive racing Mario Kart.  Although she did say if she ever gamed she would create a toon on the opposite faction to kill my character...which was a great idea until I told her we come back to life.  That was followed by "that's stupid".

Given how great the first two Godfathers were, 2nd one especially, the 3rd probably couldn't live up to it.

Sort of like Star Wars.  Empire Strikes back was better than A New Hope and then Return of the Jedi comes out with Ewoks and everyone hates it.

Afternoon Jabbers!

Apologies if I ramble as I've apparently been drinking this afternoon for no good reason.  I'm really excited so many people have been finding interest in this guild and I think the Wildstar go live is going to be nothing short of legendary.

As one can assume, here at SoH we pile up the questions and the points don't matter:

Is banking/ finance what you were excited about/ anticipated going into or did it just work out for you?

What is the biggest lesson having kids has taught you?

What is the longest investment of time you've ever spent in a game and what were you doing it for?

What was the last book you recall finishing?

What is the one ice cream flavor you think is the most disgusting?

Hope you like it here!  People are amazing and hope to game with you sometime opening weekend if you've preordered (if not, Ill be dropping settler buffs for you at some point).

Cheers, friend.

oh hello.

are you looking forward to Warplots?

also, i like the Ewoks. Jar Jar, on the other hand...

Yes, definitely looking forward to Warplots, I only know what I have seen from the DevSpeak but really the strategy that I am sure that is involved should be really fun to do as a guild.

Yeah, the Ewoks were all right.  But let's not speak of the one we shall not name.

Cheers, friend.

My major was accounting so I knew I would be in the finance field somewhere as I knew I'd get my MBA in Finance a few years out of college.  I was in investment banking for a good 7 years which I really enjoyed doing mezz and equity deals for land developers and homebuilders, but with the crash in 2008 our company ended up shutting down so one of the few options I had in Phoenix, AZ was banking doing special assets, which the only way to put that is miserable.  Basically working on broken commercial real estate deals and trying to fix them or if not foreclosing on the office building / shopping mall and then suing the borrower for the deficiency.  However, I have now transition banks and roles back into doing commercial deals again in our specialty finance group which is pretty entrepreneurial (or as much as can be) at a bank.  Happy to be where I am at now and going through the shit for the last 6 years definitely taught me a ton more than I ever learned previously.

Biggest lesson having kids taught me is I had a lot of free time when I had no kids lol.  Then when we had 2 kids I realized how much time I had when I had 1 kid ;).  But seriously, not that anyone ever is really prepared or taught how to be a parent, but the one thing I am sure of is your kids don't care about your job, or how much money you have, but just that they just want to be loved.  And if that's the only thing you do is just give them as much love as you can they will turn out OK (or at least less screwed up than their parents).

A secondary lesson that I have learned is how different kids can inherantly be.  Our oldest (son) is this old soul.  Sensitive, extremely empathetic towards other kids and insanely smart.  After having him in soccer and tee ball he may not end up being a star athlete if it's any indication at this age.  He always does what he is told.  Our daughter on the other hand while extremely sweet has a lot of...let's call it spunk.  At one and a half when I asked her to do something she spun around, pointed her finger at me and said "don't do that" and walked away.  I think I just stared dumbfounded.  I thought I was the most brilliant dad ever with how our son was and then to see that realized while certainly I have an impact, there are some certain inherant traits kids have so you just need to understand accordingly and adjust.  With that said, she can pretty much run as fast as my son, pretty much throws the ball better than he does, and is his equal at soccer at 2 while he is 4.  Now that she can defend herself if my son takes one of her toys she pretty much will grab another and smack him on the head to get it back.  Long story short, I am pretty much screwed when she becomes a teenager.  Sorry, way longer answer than you were hoping for.

Biggest time investment in a game was definitely WoW.  Came on in 2007 right at the launch of the first expansion and pretty much played it a ton through the early part of this year.  What I think that and hopefully W* fills a niche of competition that I don't get playing competitive sports anymore as weird as that may sound.  I really enjoy learning about my class, how to get better, learning strategies of BGs (and in the case of W* warplots) and optimal gameplay in them.  I typically lean towards DPS or heals, mainly played a Rogue, Warlock, and Priest in WoW (a bit of Shadow and Disc).

The last book I finished was Malcolm Gladwell's "What the Dog Saw".  The guy digs into a lot of trends and analyzes them and makes you think a lot differently than what your instinctual reaction may be.  I would recommend all of his books.  Also love Kurt Vonnegut for fiction.  Guy is pretty brilliant. Currently reading the 2nd Hunger Games book since we never see real movies anymore, although if you want to know anything about Dora the Explorer, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Cars, Planes, or Thomas the Train I am your guy.

Most disgusting ice cream flavor all time, which there are no contenders is Durian.  If you don't know what durian is, it is this fruit from Asia that literally smells like garbage / natural gas (like when there is a leak or your gas oven is on but didn't light).  I lived in Asia for 8 years (4 in Thailand and 4 in Indonesia) as a kid and in Thailand I had this ice cream thinking it was Vanilla.  Took one bite, almost threw up, and threw it in the trash.

I preordered so am looking forward to leveling up with all of you this weekend.
