Well luckily I was able to crash at my friend's place for the duration of the blackout..but my poor kitties were toughing it out in the basement at home. Power finally came back around 6pm yesterday. Had to toss all the foods!!

SSDs are only good if you don't plan on uninstalling and reinstalling a lot...which is why they haven't taken over the home market that much (that and cost). As Bryant mentioned look at speed and size, plan ahead, don't get the size you need right now!

solid state drives are one of the biggest upgrades for a computer out. You just run your OS on it and programs that you use alot on them. Keep your old harddrive for all the space.

My old hard drive is da problem. I think it stops spinning when Abby jumps on the comp.

You should plan for around $1k if you are doing everything from scratch. You can spend as little as $500 and as much as $2k while still remaining in the realm of 'mainstream'. To get a decent gaming rig for less than $1k you really need to build, tho.

Ashin is pretty spot on, on those estimates. I built my first pc last year and was pretty nervous about it. The actual build was very simple. I think all the cables are now slotted so they can only go into the correct ports. If you have ever installed ram or a graphics card its really not that much different.

A month or two ago I built a new rig. Since I was looking for one that would last me at least 5 years it ended up being around $1700. When making a proper build though there were very good systems you could build for gaming around $800. They would require more upgrades as time moves on but can run all of todays games pretty well.
