its understandable that you probably have misconceived notions on the habitat of betta fish. As many people new to the hobby have the same ideas. But believe me betta fish dont live in puddles. They mostly live in large complex eco systems like the mekong river. And that water that looks "gross" is due to vast amounts of driftwood thats leeching tannins.

Yeah, there are a LOT of commonly accepted misconceptions about these fish. Sucks for them. Friends of ours have one in a kind of vase with pretty dirty water and no filter. I get on them about it =/ Hate seeing these fish in tiny bowls in stores as decor, or even as most small pet shops sell them.
